Salt Lake Climbers Alliance, Access Fund and Black Diamond Equipment Celebrate Re-opening of Gate Buttress at Little Cottonwood Canyon Climbing Area

Ceremonial Opening fundraiser party, Thursday, June 8, 6-10 p.m., at Black Diamond Headquarters

SALT LAKE CITY – (June 8, 2017) – Salt Lake Climbers Alliance (SLCA), Access Fund and Black Diamond Equipment recently announced an agreement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) to open access for 140 acres, including the Gate Buttress at the base of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The agreement re-opens access to more than 575 routes and 125 boulder problems for rock climbers, who will become stewards of the property. To celebrate this initiative, Black Diamond will host a parking lot party, Thursday, June 8 from 6-10 p.m. at its headquarters to fundraise for ongoing stewardship and improvements to the area. This event is open to the public, and more information is available here: www.saltlakeclimbers.org/events

“The Gate Buttress was first pioneered by former Salt Lake City Mayor Ted Wilson, and the re-opening of this area and the surrounding boulders ushers in a new era of partnership between SLCA, LDS Church and Access Fund,” said John Walbrecht, President Black Diamond. “This is just another step in BD’s journey to preserve access and conservation. We moved to the Wasatch in 1991, we love Utah and see its landscapes as an asset to our company. We will continue to support public lands and maintain access to open space for recreation locally and nationally.”

Black Diamond actively supports advocacy organizations, including the Conservation Alliance, Utah Avalanche Center, American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education, Save Our Canyons, Friends of Colorado Avalanche Information Center and specific programs in support of Bears Ears, the American Alpine Club, American Mountain Guides Association and the Rock Project.
