The Costa SLAM Film Event Launches Nationwide, Bringing Remarkable Pursuits of Female Fly Anglers to the Big Screen

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (April 20, 2017) -- Costa Sunglasses, manufacturer of premium quality sunglasses and passionate protector of water, today announced the Costa SLAM Film Event, showcasing female anglers in three films, including the original Costa Productions film, "SLAM." The event series kicks off at Mossy Creek Fly Shop in Harrisonburg, Virginia April 20 as part of a fundraiser for Casting for Recovery and Project Healing Waters' inaugural joint retreat.

"SLAM," directed by Michael Torbisco, highlights the journey of three experienced anglers from different walks of life, Hilary Hutcheson, Heather Harkavy and Kate Taylor, who set out to achieve a "slam" in the Florida Keys -- catching a tarpon, a bonefish, and a permit in one day. Earning a slam in the Keys is a rare achievement attempted by many anglers, but harnessed by few.

"SLAM" will be accompanied in the Costa SLAM Film Event by two other applauded films, "Old Friends, New Fish" and "Odd Man Out," both featuring remarkable pursuits of female anglers across the country.

“The idea that Heather, Kate and I, coming from very different fishing worlds with limited experience in the Florida Keys backcountry, could show up in Islamorada and convince the best captains in the area to tackle this wild quest with us is just...well, wild,” said Hutcheson, a featured angler and Costa pro. “I think when they see SLAM, viewers will be able to taste the thrill of the chase with us and feel the passion and drama of the pursuit in this beautiful, haunting place.”

To find out whether the women of "SLAM" and the Keys' stellar boat captains earned the film's titular achievement, dozens of fly shops and organization have come together to host the Costa SLAM Film Event at various venues across the country. Many event hosts are using the opportunity to raise money for Casting for Recovery, Trout Unlimited, and other worthy fly fishing-related non-profit organizations.
